A Letter from Nurse Cindy
December 8, 2022
Dear Parents/Guardians,
We are currently seeing an increase in illness within our community and our schools. Please help us in
controlling the spread of illness by keeping your students home if they are experiencing any of the following:
- Fever (100.4 and above)
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Persistent Cough
- Contagious diseases
- General illness symptoms that prevent your child from participating in routine classroom activities
Your student may return to school when:
● Symptoms are improving and they are feeling well enough to participate in normal activities
● Fever free for at least 24 hours without use of fever-reducing medication
● At least 24 hours since the last episode of vomiting or diarrhea
● 24 hours after starting antibiotics if prescribed by a provider
If your child is sent home with a fever, vomiting or diarrhea and returns prior to the 24 hour time frame, expect that we will call you to send your child home.
Please contact the school office either by email (jstrabala@highlandhuskies.org or ddewolf@highlandhuskies.org ) or by phone when your student is home ill. We would greatly appreciate that you share symptoms and any diagnosis so that we can monitor the health of our student body. We are currently NOT requiring any testing when a student has COVID symptoms.
The Highland Community School District continues to follow the Iowa Department of Public Health illness
and exclusions requirements. These requirements can be found under under the “Nurse” tab on the Highland website as well as here:Common Child Illnesses and Exclusion Criteria for Education and Child Care Settings
Please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns, cpeiffer@highlandhuskies.org. I appreciate your help keeping our students and staff healthy as we move into the winter months!
Thank You,
Nurse Cindy
