Rayne Foley, 8th Grader, walks across the stage Saturday, March 7, and the University of Iowa Memorial Union, displaying her 2019 Scholastic Writing Medal. Foley won a Silver key for science fiction and fantasy story, "The Prisoner," and an honorable mention for her flash fiction, "The Haven." Awardees were treated to a gallery walk, where winning art and writing pieces were featured. Awardees, teachers, and parents then went to the Iowa Memorial Ballroom, where they heard students read their award-winning work, heard past winners give advice and encouragement. Mary Swander, Iowa's Poet Laureate Emeritus, also read. Since 1923, these awards have been recognizing promising writers and artists. Foley joins the list of alumni such as Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen King, Garrison Keillor, Sylvia Plath, and many more. Gold Keys are awarded to the top 5-7% of all entries. Silver Keys are awarded to the top 7-10% of all entries. Honorable Mention is awarded to the top 10-15% of all entries. The district Highland competes in includes the Minneapolis, St. Paul, Kansas City, St. Louis, Chicago, and Detroit.
