Highland school district held the first Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) event with cooperation from various University of Iowa Programs on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 from 6pm-8pm. The event will be held annually.
“Our goal is to inspire a passion for STEAM within our students through discovery and hands-on experience,” Megan Allen, School Board Vice President remarked. “With thanks to the University of Iowa Physics department, the College of Engineering, and the College of Education, WISE “Wise Women in Science and Engineering” program for supporting our event and helping to educate our students in these important fields of study.”
Additionally, the Finger Tightans, Highland’s Robotics team participated with an interactive robotics display. The event also included a driving simulator which taught safety on the importance of not texting while driving. The students explored how floodplains help support the environments, and also learned how to make rockets.
Nate Robinson, School Board President said, “I think the event was a great success with a fantastic turnout of 125 people attending, and it was great to see a family-friendly focused event for the whole school district to enjoy.”
The event was organized by Highland ESO President Maria Meller and Megan Allen, Vice President of Highland School Board. Along with the Highland School District STEAM Committee, the organizational leaders will hold more STEAM events in the future and are organizing stem camps in October and November.
