STEM Grants Awarded to Highland Elementary and Highland Middle School
April 17, 2018
Exciting opportunities are coming for Highland Community School District. Highland Elementary and Highland Middle Schools are recipients of grants awarded by the Southeast Iowa Regional STEM Advisory Board of the Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council. Each building applied for the STEM Scale-up Program award, Making STEM Connections.
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The Making STEM Connections program is designed to empower teachers to cultivate engaging, purposeful and successful extensions of their already developed curriculum. The making philosophy directs students to use their hands in conjunction with their minds to produce meaningful learning outcomes. The grant will support the increase of incorporating the use of STEM opportunities in all areas of the curriculum. Funding will support literature materials, professional development for teachers, and a variety materials to support a classroom of 30 such as a GoPro camera, robotics components, MaKey MaKey, circuit materials, DC Motors, hand tools, soldering iron, sewing machine, safety goggles and first aid kit.
Both buildings at Highland are excited to bring these learning opportunities to the students. Programs will be implemented at the beginning of the 2018-19 school year.
